Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a system of natural healing and is the life force inherent in all beings, sentient and
insentient. It is possibly thousands of years old, and the technique can be traced back to Tibetan Buddhist
monks. It was re-discovered in 1800’s by Mikao Usui. The Usui system of Reiki is very simple but a
very powerful healing technique that is easily given. Anyone can learn how to direct Reiki energy
consciously. During a Reiki treatment the client remains fully clothed.
Reiki , as taught by Dr. Usui is ultimately a path to enlightenment. To walk the path of
enlightenment, it is vital that we are well prepared for the this. Dharma is what prepares us. Dharma is a
Sanscrit word that means law. In Buddhist terminology it is used to mean the teachings of the Buddha. In our
case Reiki Dharma means the teachings and guidelines of Dr.Mikao Usui, Usui Sensei as he was and still is
called in Japan to this day.
How does Reiki work?
Life force energy flows within the physical body through the pathways called chakras, meridians and
around our bodies within a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the
body, supporting them in their vital functions. Disrupting this life force causes diminished function in one
or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body. The life force is also responsive to thoughts and
feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or
feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and
cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of
the physical body. The Reiki energy restores the balance of the Life Force energy taking the body out of dis-eased state and back into
total wellness. Because Reiki is channelled the Reiki practitioner's energies are never depleted. In fact, the
Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and client to be in need of healing, so both receive
treatment. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases one's energy and leaves one surrounded with
loving feelings of well-being. Learning Reiki makes you aware of the energy flow and enables you to direct
energy at will.
Can anyone learn Reiki?
Yes. Dr. Usui himself says in his Reiki handbook that anyone regardless of their age can learn
Reiki. Reiki is very easy to learn, and is not dependent on intellectual capacity, spiritual development or
religious beliefs. It is therefore available to everyone, of any age or background. Reiki is taught
or ‘handed down’ by a Reiki Master.
What are Reiki symbols?
The Reiki symbols are tools to help us direct energy like keys that open doors to a higher mind.
The symbols trigger a belief and with your full intention the symbols helps the user to get the results
intended. Once you have learned to direct energy with the help of the symbols, I encourage you to let them
go. After you have crossed the river you don’t need to carry the ferryboat on your shoulders for the rest of
How many Reiki symbols are used in Japan?

What happens in a Reiki initiation?
The initiation into Reiki reminds you of your innermost energetic nature. It is not that the Reiki
teacher opens your internal channel- this channel is open in each and every one of us already. If it were
closed we would not be able to live. Unawareness is our greatest shortcoming. The Reiki initiation draws our
attention to the energetic aspects of consciousness. Let’s test this with a little experiment: focus your
attention on the tip of your nose for a few moments. You will suddenly feel it, as if it had not been there
before! But the truth is that you were simply not aware of it before, it has been there as long as you have!
The same is true for the energy that runs in our bodies: the moment we become aware of it, it begins to be
The more attention we give it, the more we feel it. The more we feel it the more we connect to the
energy that surrounds us. And in this circle of energy we realise the one-ness with all beings, sentient and
But a word of warning the Reiki initiation will not instantly turn you into a more spiritual being.
You will still have to do the work on yourself. But it will be very enjoyable!
